Hair & scalpHAY 1998
Solid: double-blind randomized trial
Nearly 3×
Nearly three times as many saw improvement.
statistically significant: p = .008
context
Can hands-on scalp work matter for your hair itself, not just your mood? One careful trial says it can help.
method
86 people rubbed either an essential-oil blend or a plain carrier oil into their scalp every day for seven months, and neither they nor the assessors knew which was which.
finding
44% of the essential-oil group improved, versus 15% on plain carrier oil: a real, statistically significant difference (p=.008).
What this study shows
- Daily scalp massage with certain essential oils beat a carrier-oil control (44% vs 15% improved, p=.008)
- A real, statistically significant benefit for an autoimmune hair-loss condition
- The trial was randomized and double-blind
What this study does not show
- Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition, different from the gradual thinning most people picture as “hair loss”
- Both groups were massaged, so we can't credit the oils over the hands
- It's a single trial that hasn't yet been repeated
Everybody's different, so results vary, and none of this is medical advice. If a scalp or hair concern sticks around, please see a doctor or dermatologist.
