Hair & scalpKOYAMA 2016
Early signal: small pilot study
+8%
Hair measurably thicker in 24 weeks.
thicker strands, not more of them
context
Could regular scalp massage make hair thicker over time? A small early study offers the first hint.
method
9 healthy men used a scalp-massage device for four minutes a day, on just one side of the head, for 24 weeks.
finding
Over 24 weeks, hair shafts grew roughly 8% thicker (0.085 mm to 0.092 mm), though the number of hairs stayed the same.
What this study shows
- Hair-shaft thickness rose from 0.085 mm to 0.092 mm (about 8%) with daily device massage
- A measurable change in a surrogate marker over 24 weeks
- A reasonable prompt for larger, better-controlled research
What this study does not show
- Just nine men, no blinding, and part-funded by the device maker
- The number of hairs didn't change
- Thicker shafts are not the same as new growth or fuller hair
Everybody's different, so results vary, and none of this is medical advice. If a scalp or hair concern sticks around, please see a doctor or dermatologist.
